TweetStats analysis for @ketan

A statistical analysis of engagement with the Twitter Community

A statistical analysis of engagement with the Twitter Community

Twitter is usually a fascination, addiction, or a complete enigma to many. Unlike Facebook whose growth and popularity seems to boil down to virtual farms, quizzes and questionnaires, the twitter model is more based around direct communication with chosen group of individual streams that you subscribe to.

On the most basic level you follow people that interest you, and their updates show in your stream, the secondary aspect is that individuals in the twitterverse can choose to follow your updates.

These 2 channels of information flow are what make up the basic use of twitter, and for many, it seems pointless. I must admit I first dipped my toe into the twitter pools after the SXSW presentation that really brought twitter to a wider audience, and I really didn’t have a clue what to do (how to make use of it)

It seemed an almost alien form of communication, my inability to grasp the simple concept behind its usage and the uphill struggle a newcomer faces, that is no-one knows you’re there. There are Twitter Directories and using search is a good way to find people to follow.

I began using SMS to send updates to my twitter account which was the first liberating aspect of using the service, something that is not easily achieved  on other systems. This freedom to send a status update anywhere with a mobile signal would form the seed of my transformation to that of a “twitter user“.

As you can see by the chart, my use of twitter fluctuated in a very constant pattern for over 16months – I had linked my twitter updates directly to my Facebook updates, which allowed me to consolidate my updates into one action, and this was the only Social Network Updates I would use. My dependency and use of Facebook had been waning for many, many months and then all of a sudden as you can see in March 2009 My updates exploded and went through what I am calling the Tweet Barrier.

What I find interesting about this is my understanding and usage of twitter exploded at this time, now there can be a number of explanations, changes in personal circumstances, major events, conferences etc .. Whatever the catalyst is, I believe there is an assimilation of knowledge and discovery associated with using twitter and this includes using the facilities that it has to offer including Hash Tags, Search, Retweeting, building a following and communicating about what you’re passionate about with others that share the same interests.

I feel that this only happens when you’ve grasped the nature of twitter and there is a roughly equal ratio of give / take which I also think is proportionate to a balanced Followers / Following Ratio.

When this happens, the benefits of Twitter are unlocked like a special bonus screen in a coin-op game (showing my age !) – and it allows you to refine your involvement and allows you to make a decision on How you want to use Twitter, rather than constantly scratching your head or immediately thinking Twitter is just there to announce your performing some daily personal routine .. thats not what Twitter is about, and if you can break through the Tweet Barrier you will find all the fruit, bonus points, extra lives and multipliers your digital avatar will ever need.

I’m fascinated with these Statistics and intend to write a more personal analysis once I can get further detailed data out from my Twitter archive. I think there are other factors that contribute to my findings, so I’d like to thank @dacort and his online http://tweetstats.com/ Web Application which is where I created the chart above and inspired me to write this post, I also used the Skitch appliction on Mac OSX to enhance and annotate the chart.

I can recount the number of times I’ve travelled through Paddington Station, this bench is on the Central, District line platform.

Its a major hub and much like a lot of areas of our lives, that we have to travel through frequently we find similarities, and certain comforts to ease the passage. I also like old signs .. designers cared then I think.

The mainline station is undergoing some MAJOR renovations and there will be some overland links to key hubs in the London Network, lets hope they do a good job for us.

My Eco Wedding

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

I recently got married and organised the wedding with my now wife, we wanted it to be as eco and green, so we decided on using as many Ethical Junction companies as we could for the the big day, there is a little write up about it on Ethical Pulse – the EJ members’ blog

Unfortunately the Eco Bass Guitar wasn’t ready in time, Simon Lee suffered to a biking accident that caused a smashed finger, putting him out of commission for a few weeks, however he is mending and the components are coming together, the Delano pickups have arrived.

Simon was able to join us at our Reception and got to see the band play live !

SCI FI LONDON 2006

Tuesday, April 25th, 2006

The UK?s only dedicated science fiction and fantastic film festival reaches primary school age on April 26th, 2006. To mark its fifth birthday, this popular film festival opens in a new London venue with a colourful programme of UK and world premieres, international sci-fi shorts, documentaries, all-nighter screenings, talks and free events. This year?s festival runs April 26th ? April 30th, 2006 and takes place at London?s luxurious Apollo West End cinema, 19 Lower Regent Street.

Highlights include:
SURVIVE STYLE 5 (Japan, 2004) UK PREMIERE
First film from Japanese writer-director, Sekiguchi this movie has a rare vitality in its quick-witted edits and story-telling. Five fantastical tales of crime and mayhem intersect in an absurdist comedy starring Sonny Chiba and, er? Vinnie Jones.

CSA: CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA (USA, 2005)
Spike Lee presents this provocative piece of satire with, as its central conceit, an imagined, alternative history of America. In this parallel universe, not only did the Confederates win the American Civil War but slavery is widespread and an accepted part of contemporary society. Lured in by plausible scenarios in the clever script, the viewer is left with an uncomfortable feeling that the boundaries between fact and fiction are very blurred.

FIRST ON THE MOON (Russia, 2005)
An exquisitely crafted film mixing fact and fantasy to spotlight the contradictions of Stalinist Russia, using the space program as its basis. In the spring of 1938, in the mountains of northern Chile, a flying object falls to earth in flames. Investigation by a film crew reveals that a secret Soviet space program was in place prior to World War II. Scientists and the military colluded, the film would have you believe, to develop a spacecraft 23 years before Yuri Gagarin even set foot in a rocket.
A unique piece of cinema.

LOGAN?S RUN (30TH ANNIVERSARY SCREENING)
Within our classic movie thread, we screen the seminal thirty-something angst movie? 30 years on from its release, we are delighted to present Michael Anderson?s stylish tale of a Utopian society?s nasty little secret.

Citizens in the 23rd Century live lives of languid pleasure but to maintain population controls, municipal computer systems decree that no one can live beyond thirty. Those who refuse to accept death become ‘Runners’ seeking ?Sanctuary?. An élite force, the Sandmen, has been created to hunt the Runners.
When Logan (Michael York), a Sandman, has his lifeclock prematurely accelerated to 30, he must decide whether or not to run. We couldn?t resist screening this on April 30th?

Graffiti Bridge ala Croydon
Originally uploaded by spiritquest.

I’ve been trying to regain a state of normality, the World Of Wrestling film shoot has left me feeling invigorated and wiped out, need to recharge my nickel-Metal Hydride power packs. So last night I decided to clean up the office desk that’s been neglected for a couple of weeks, I managed to retrieve a note that was left on my mobile phone that I’d scribbled onto a scrap of paper.

PC Birchall from Lincolnshire !!? I haven’t been up to Lincolnshire in over 10yrs !

This call had left me feeling a little disturbed, as this PC had called my mobile following up an investigation he was involved in, and my number was a lead in a case of vandalism in a small village ..

The thing is I couldn’t get in touch with the PC straight away, so I had no idea if this was just a wind up. What had transpired was that a house had been vandalised and my mobile number had been graffiti’d on the wall … ?!

He just tried the mobile number to se if it was real, asked me a few questions, the first being where do u live … .. surreal.

DON”T USE MY NUMBER if you’re going to graffitti it on a wall somewhere please.

Death of an Era
Originally uploaded by spiritquest.

I grew up as a kid during the birth of VHS and VCR society. Before Blockbusters sprouted up from the earth..

This scene reminds me of the strewn Audio Cassettes I used to see smashed and spilling its internals all over pavements.

A sense of loss and grief, even big stores are trying to shift there VHS stock . . It realy is the death of analogue video. With DVD production in overdrive and HD transmissions, we are securley swampped within the realm of Digital Video now.

I’ll always keep a VCR handy!

A new blog is born !

Saturday, April 9th, 2005

In the fast paced world of email, broadband access and a huge surge in net usage, one of my dreams has come true. I’ve finally given birth to my own blog! Delivered on this day, many years of frustration and isolation have finally been realised, and my digital blog can hopefully flourish and grow in the time ahead.

Normally spending most of my time building/fixing and tweaking sites or computer solutions for others, I wanted a little space on the net to be able to announce diversions and events in my life, and make this an easy spot to share with family friends and the internet population.

Special thanks go out to phpLondon who popped up on my internet radar last month, and phpKitchen. Their influence got me act on getting this php based blog up and running.

At the same time, I’ve always thought it would be good to offer a blog service through my business Spirit Quest, and what better way to test it then run the blog software myself :)

So I bid you all welcome, and I’m really looking forward to sharing some binary brain-space with you all.
